Public Houses in the Brecon Beacons:
What are "Pubs" ?
  • Public Houses or "pubs" as they are often referred to in Wales can be a little confusing.  Some are merely drinking establishments.Whereas others may sell sandwiches and light snacks such as heated pies. Many will provide bar meals such as chicken in the basket of varying quality and price, whereas others offer quality of restaurant style food. Yet again some public houses may in addition offer bed and breakfast style accommodation of varying quality. Most pubs offering accommodation will also be listed under either the guest house or hotel sections of this web site. It is also worth noting that the "character" of a public house will vary considerably.  Some may be old-fashioned and unchanged for centuries whereas other modernised theme pubs may also have oak beams! Perhaps more important for the visitor is to realise that the behaviour you are likely to encounter particularly on a Friday or Saturday evening is likely to vary from pub to pub.  In some establishments even a swear word may be frowned upon by the landlord and the regulars whereas others lively and unruly behaviour even the regular weekend punch-up in the street outside may be a custom associated with that establishment. All one can advise a visitor to do is to look carefully and judge for yourself.  If an establishment is not one in which you feel comfortable then quietly finish you drink and leave. Having said that most visitors will find that most pubs are friendly comfortable places in which to eat and drink. It is a peculiarly British establishment and not to be missed.
