There are several opportunities to partake of these waterborne sports in the Brecon Beacons National Park. However local knowledge is important and you should enquire from a suitably qualified and experienced individual or club prior to attempting any of these activities. It is also likely that you will have to obtain a suitable permit. The river Wye is popular as a navigable river with canoeists. Llangorse Lake, Pontsticill Reservoir (Merthyr Tydfil Sailing Club), the river Usk and the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal also offer opportunities for water sport - please enquire first.

Brecon and Abergavenny Canal First opened in the C18th this canal connected Brecon with Newport. The canal mainly transported industrial goods including coal, limestone and iron ore. Today there are 30 miles navigable between Brecon and Pontypool managed by the British Waterways Board. A tow path runs along the canal for miles. It is popular for canal holidays and for day trips. Narrow boats and cabin cruisers can be hired for a holiday or you can join organised trips for the day or part of a day. There are several locations along the Brecon and Abergavenny Canal  worth visiting in particular Goytre Wharf.
