introductions to the wonderful range of outdoor activities available in the Brecon Beacons
National Park. The Brecon Beacons National Park Information Mountain Hut is not able to
provide additional information on the range, quality or suitability of the services
offered by the following listed operators - which are just a few of the many on offer.
Their listing does not imply directly or indirectly any recommendation or otherwise of the
quality of their service.
|
Safety Guidance:
Outdoor activities can be dangerous and you should satisfy
yourself prior to taking part in any of the following sports that:
-
it is an activity suitable
for your personal state
of health, fitness, temperament and ability
-
that the organisation and individual
instructor are properly qualified, experienced and insured.
-
make further enquiries, consult with a national governing body
(see below) and ask to see the
licensing and qualifications of the people selected.
-
Verify
these details with the

National
Governing Bodies - Precautions for Children and Adults
-
CHILDREN AND THE OUTDOORS: Any
individual or organisation seeking to provide outdoor activities for under 18's must be
licensed with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority
. Please contact this authority or visit their website to ascertain whether the person or
firm you are considering is properly licensed. The golden rule is make as many enquiries
as you consider necessary and satisfy yourself of the competence of the firm and
the actual individual responsible on the day before
entrusting your child to their care particularly as regards a potentially dangerous
outdoor sport.
-
ADULTS AND THE OUTDOORS: There is no legislative requirement to be licensed to offer outdoor
activity training or opportunities to adults. However, there are widely recognised
qualifications for various outdoor sports and the following National bodies can provide
more information. The golden rule is make as many enquiries as you feel necessary and make
sure that the qualifications and experience of the firm
and the actual individual responsible for your training is more than satisfactory before entrusting your well being to
their care.

Sporting and Challenge Events
in the Brecon Beacons:
An organised
event involving significant numbers of people in countryside recreation
such as a sponsored walk is subject to careful
consideration under the terms of the
1995 Environment Act. A
National Park Authority has a duty to promote enjoyment of the
countryside and this may include sporting and challenge events. However,
if it is considered that an event could prove damaging to the
environment than the requirements of conservation take priority over
recreation. Where an event will take place in part or
whole on land owned by the
National Park Authority (or another statutory body which is bound to
consider the requirements of the 1995 Act such as a local authority or
the Countryside Council for Wales)
then permission will be required to hold the event. Permission is of
course also required from private landowners. Any organisation thinking
of organising such an event should contact the National Park Authority
at an early stage in the planning and seek advice as to the best way to
organise such an event so that it will fit in with the guidelines
(details available from the BBNPA)
thus increasing likelihood of permission being granted.
Dyfed Powys Police force
have a leaflet which gives excellent advice on
sponsored walks.
