General Information:

  • Generally unpowered hang or para gliding is likely to be considered an appropriate activity for a National Park where the emphasis is on quiet enjoyment of the countryside and consideration of other users. Powered hang or para gliding would not be likely to be considered appropriate.

  • An activity such as gliding can be dangerous to participants and others and needs to be carried out in a careful way.

  • Within the Brecon Beacons National Park hang gliding takes place on that the Hatterall Hill in the Vale of Ewyas, on the part of the Blorenge south of Abergavenny, and on Hay Bluff where there is an agreement with Tregoyd Estate.

  • In respect of each of these locations use of the site for hang gliding is managed by the South Wales Gliding Club and potential users should contact the club for further information.  It should be noted that anywhere else in the national park hang gliding would require the express permission of the owner.

  • It is understood that the National Trust which owns extensive areas of land in the National Park do not normally grant permission.

  • Paragliding has taken place from the Heol Senni Quarry which is in the ownership of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and potential users should contact the authority.

  • Powered Aeroplane Fliers: Not to ensure what regulations apply so it's probably a good idea to contact a local club for further details. Certainly such an activity would require the landowners permission and I suspect that it is unlikely that this would be granted in respect of any of the common land in the Brecon Beacons. further information in respect of this should be obtainable from the National Park Authority. There is a group that meets on a regular basis at Rhos Fawr near Talgarth. Contact information for the group can be obtained from the Talgarth Information Centre. They should be able to provide further details of membership and flying opportunities in locality.
