Danywenallt Study Centre:

This web page provides an introduction to the excellent facilities offered at the Danywenallt Study Centre. Detailed information is available from the Danywenallt Study Centre. Anyone intending to book the centre for a group or join a course should contact the Study Centre Management for up to date and detailed information about facilities, charges and courses on offer. The Study Centre also serves as a Youth Hostel in conjunction with the YHA.

Specialist Courses   

This Brecon Beacons National Park Authority study centre is located in a converted farm to the south of Talybont on Usk. Throughout the year the Danywenallt Study Centre is used by a wide variety of groups which follow a range of activities related to the study or appreciation of the environment generally and the Brecon Beacons in particular.

The study centre is equipped with a lecture / dining hall, a lounge a study room and 11 bedrooms one of which has a wheelchair access. Every bedroom has its own a shower and  most have a separate toilet.

The centre is booked by schools and colleges as a residential study base for a range of courses. Weekend bookings are very popular with walking clubs, photographic societies and landscape painting groups. The centre is also used for in-service training, meetings and conferences on a day or residential basis.

Clothing and equipment:

Many of the courses held at the centre will involve periods out of doors. It should be noted that even in the summer the weather in the Brecon Beacons can be cold, wet and changeable. It is advisable to bring suitable comfortable clothing and equipment. Further advice regarding the clothing and equipment a particular activity will require is available from the study centre manager or the course leader.

The study centre is registered with the adventure activities licensing authority to provide specified activities in hill walking and mountaineering. Other activities offered at the centre may not necessarily come within the scope of the adventure activities licensing regulations 1996. Further inquiries may be made via the centre manager.

Details of the cost of booking the centre may be obtained by contacting the centre manager. Different fee arrangements exist for primary schools, secondary schools, all other groups and for day courses.

  • It should be noted that the centre is not open to day visitors and caters only for individuals who are registered for courses being held at the centre.

Alternative Field Study Centres: 

Location and Directions:

The study centre is located at SO 107205. An infrequent bus service runs between Abergavenny and the Brecon via Talybont on Usk. Arrangements to collect the visitors from Talybont on Usk can be made by contacting the centre manager prior to arrival. The nearest railway stations are located at Merthyr Tydfil and Abergavenny. It would be necessary to take public transport from these railway stations and it should be noted that services are infrequent.

The study centre can be reached from Talybont on Usk by following up the road signposted to Talybont reservoir. This takes you from the centre of Talybont village across the canal draw bridge and along a minor road through the small community of Aber until reaching the Talybont reservoir dam wall. Drive across the dam wall and on the far side a drive away on the left leads down to the study centre.

  • It should be noted that the centre is not accessible to coaches.
