General Information:

  Cycling in the Brecon Beacons:

Cycling is a truly enjoyable way to explore and view the Brecon Beacons National Park. The National Park is covered by a myriad of the country lanes taking you too small old settlements and isolated farmhouses set amidst mountain scenery all interconnected via a network of main roads.
  • A circular section of the Taff Trail connecting Merthyr Tydfil to Pontsticill to Talybont on Usk to Brecon returning to Merthyr Tydfil via the Storey Arms encompasses fine panoramas of the central beacons.  Most of this combined cycle and footpath route is off road. You can join this circular tour either at Brecon or at Merthyr Tydfil where the railway station provides a useful public transport link.  Alternatively the linear section of the Taff Trail leading to Merthyr Tydfil and then the Beacons can be commenced at Cardiff.
  • The Lôn Las Cymru (the Wales National Cycle Route) runs the length of Wales from Chepstow or Cardiff to Holyhead. The middle section of the Welsh National Cycle Route passes through the Brecon Beacons National Park. The route includes the Taff Trail from Cardiff to Brecon passing through the industrial valleys of South Wales before choosing between the Taf Fawr or Taf Fechan Valleys at Cefn Coed Y Cymer for your passage through the Beacons to Brecon. The route onwards from Brecon to Builth Wells includes a link to the town of books Hay on Wye. Two easy to read maps available from Sustrans provide detailed  information about this 185 mile long route.
  • A more challenging section can be found on the Nant Helen mountain bike course in Abercrave route 43.
  • There is in additional challenging section in the western area of the national park. Abergavenny to Gospel Pass to Hay on Wye route 43.
