Ogof
Ffynnon Ddu which translates as the Cave of the Black Spring is located in
the Brecon Beacons National Park north of Abercrave. It is roughly the
opposite side of the same valley as the
Dan Y Ogof National
Showcaves of Wales in an area of
limestone conducive to the formation of cave systems. It
is part of the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu National Nature Reserve one of 68 such
designated areas managed by the Countryside
Council of Wales.

The entrance is a short distance from the old limestone quarrying hamlet of
Penwyllt which is the location of the headquarters of the
South Wales Caving Club. This club was formed in 1946 and later that
year two members of the club, Peter Harvey and Ian Nixon, discovered and
began a 20 year exploration by the club of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu. Ogof Ffynnon
Ddu is usually referred to as OFD is the third longest cave system in the UK
and the deepest at 308 m. For more detailed information on this cave system
